How to balance between being results-driven and supportive to your team.Discover how to balance between being results-driven and supportive to your team.

Do you struggle to balance between driving for results and fostering a supportive team environment as a leader?

You often need to strive for both, although they may be competing demands or even contradictory in a sense.

Those demands usually create tensions over resource allocation and prioritisation.

If we approach the issue from a human-centric point of view, your team members are your most valuable asset.

Without them, no goals can be achieved

Without supporting and nurturing them, again, no goals can be achieved

In that sense, it’s obvious where you need to focus.

“Focus on your people, and your goals will be achieved”, many experts would suggest.

I find that is more of a euphemism, a way to discuss this issue gently.

What is often overlooked (or secretly swept under the rug) is the fine line between focusing on people and achieving goals.

If you cross that line on either side, you risk failing your team and your goals.

Let me share a few suggestions to help you achieve that balance

✔️ Your starting point is your team members; they are the ones who will execute and deliver the team’s purpose.

– Show trust in their ability to deliver

– Encourage creativity and innovation by ensuring every idea is shared and listened to, accepting mistakes as part of the process

– Align tasks with strengths and build teams’ collective skills to enable team members to perform at their natural best

✔️ However, you also need to create a framework of responsibility.

– Ensure that individual tasks and collective goals are clear and accepted by all team members.

– Foster a culture of ownership, individually and collectively

– Recognize good work not only on results achieved but also how individuals contribute to the team

Balancing these competing demands can indeed be challenging.

Allocate time for reflection and space for yourself. This helps build composure and patience under pressure.

Building your versatility enables you to thrive in diverse and challenging situations.

Mastering the balance of achieving results while developing your team is essential in today’s environment.
